2009 DC Tobacco Free Colleges and Universities Initiative

This program is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved “Best Practices” designed to educate college students and staff about the health risks associated with smoking while promoting tobacco prevention strategies on campus. The goal of this initiative is to change the social norm on college campuses by establishing 100% tobacco free institutions of higher learning in the District of Columbia which will ultimately help smokers quit and encourage others never to start.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the District, killing 720 DC residents each year. Furthermore, environmental tobacco smoke is a primary contributor to the death of more than 50,000 people per year. CDC’s most recent studies found that public health campaigns targeted and tailored to specific groups on campus are important. In accordance with those recommendations, CDC and the American Lung Association encourage colleges and universities to implement 100% tobacco free policies to change the social norm on their campuses which will encourage students and staff to reject tobacco and not become victims of the tobacco industry.

The main objectives of the Initiative are to:

Implement a 100% tobacco free campus policy by September 30, 2009.
Educate students and faculty about the benefits of tobacco-free living.
Establish partnerships among all DC college and university campuses to collectively go tobacco free campus.
Identify and utilize the strength of our student advocates and administrative support to mobilize the campus toward a tobacco free university.
Establish a system to promote Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation efforts among students and within the DC community.

SecondHand Smoke Kills!

Something has to be done! Second Hand Smoke is a serious health hazard that affects more than 3,000 non-smokers every year. From lung cancer deaths, respiratory disease, and heart disease, SHS is a major health concern. Everyone must work together to reduce exposure to SHS, especially on university campuses which should be leading the way regarding healthy initiatives and lifestyles.
